More Aussies have private health cover

(AAP) - Nearly half of all Australians are covered by some form of private health insurance, figures from the Private Health Insurance Administration Council (PHIAC) show.

As of June 30 this year, 49.9 per cent of the population held general treatment coverage and 44.7 per cent held hospital treatment coverage, an increase of 0.3 and0.1 per cent respectively since the end of March, the figures show.

The largest increase was in the 25-34 age group with an increase of 19,829 insuredpeople since the end of March this year.

The only decrease was in the 15-24 age group, which showed a reduction of 6,777insured people.

The figures show a steady increase in the number of Australians taking out privatehealth cover in every quarter since June 2005.

The total increase since 2005 was 8.6 per cent for general treatment cover and twoper cent for hospital treatment coverage.

There are concerns a proposed rise in the Medicare levy threshold will cause anexodus from private health insurance.
