SINGAPORE RELIEVED EGYPT REVOLT OVER PEACEFULLY

SINGAPORE, Feb 12 (Bernama) -- The Singapore government said it was relieved that the turn of events in Egypt, where President Hosni Mubarak had stepped down after nearly 20 days of revolt by Egyptians who were against his 30-year rule of the country, ended quite peacefully.

The Foreign Ministry said, "Egypt has entered into a new phase in its political evolution. We are relieved that this has been a largely peaceful process".

However, Singapore cautioned Egyptians that "nevertheless the road ahead is fraught with many uncertainties".

"We hope that all sides will continue to work together on the long-term challenges of building institutions to provide good governance and economic growth for the people," the ministry said, adding that Egypt's stability was important to the region and the world.

On the impact of these developments on bilateral relations, the ministry said Singapore and Egypt enjoyed long-standing and close relations, and it did not anticipate any change.
