Nsc Flying Out Malaysians From Egypt Despite End Of ``Ops Piramid``
KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) - The National Security Council (NSC) is continuing to fly back Malaysian citizens and students from strife-torn Egypt even after the government-initiated "Ops Piramid" mass evacuation exercise ended Friday.
An NSC spokesman said Saturday it was the council's responsibility to ensure the safe return of Malaysian citizens and students who wanted to come back and to monitor those who wanted to remain there.
"We still have citizens and students who will be returning on commercial flights through Singapore and Jakarta today and tomorrow," he told Bernama when contacted.
A Foreign Ministry spokesman said 2,044 of the 7,392 citizens and students moved out to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, had opted to remain in that country for the time being.
"The rest have returned to Malaysia under the Ops Piramid exercise or are on their way back under NSC monitoring," he said.
He said 1,010 people would return on four flights to Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta, thus completing the evacuation of the 5,348 Malaysian citizens and students from Egypt.
