Malaysia Goverment evacuated 8,341 Malaysians from strife-torn Egypt

SEPANG (Bernama) - The government has evacuated 8,341 Malaysians from strife-torn Egypt under the exercise codenamed "Ops Piramid", Deputy Foreign Minister Richard Riot said Monday.

He said the number included 439 people who flew in here by Malaysia Airlines (MAS) Flight MH8031 this morning.

Some 156 more people were expected to return this afternoon by a Saudi Airlines commercial flight, he told reporters after greeting the last batch of students who had flown in to the KL International Airport here from Jeddah.

Also at the airport to welcome the students were Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Jamil Khir Baharom, MAS Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Tengku Azmil Zahruddin and National Security Council Secretary Mohamed Tajudeen Abdul Wahab.

Riot said the expenditure to bring back the citizens and students was not a factor for the government because of more importance was the safety of the Malaysians who faced problems in a foreign land.

The "Ops Piramid" exercise to bring back the Malaysians, many of them students, through Jeddah was carried out from Feb 3 to 11.

Riot thanked all quarters involved in the exercise, including MAS, budget carrier AirAsia and the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF).

He also thanked the Saudi Arabian government which helped to fly back a number of Malaysians without imposing any charges.
