Body Scanners For Indian Airports Under Study
NEW DELHI (Bernama) - Indian authorities are still carefully studying the potential use of body scanners at airports as a means to tighten security so as to avert untoward incidents.
India's Civil Aviation Minister Vayalar Ravi said the idea was still "at the preliminary stage" but experiments were underway to install the technology at Indian airports, which are increasingly becoming major international gateways.
"Experiment is going on in Delhi but we have some issues, medical, privacy and efficiency.
"We will be very careful in introducing this and it will take some time," he told the media on the sidelines of the Regional Aviation Security Conference here Monday.
India mooted the idea after the 2009 terror threat when a Nigerian passenger attempted to blow up an American airline en route from Amsterdam in Netherlands to Detroit in the United States.
At present, Indian security personnel rely on door frame metal detectors, pat-down searchers and hand-held electronic scanners to search passengers before boarding at major airports.
The high-tech body scanners, widely used in the United States, are able to scan thoroughly through passengers' clothing, but had sparked off controversy due to infringement of privacy and health concerns.
