Human Capital Important To Sustain Viable Economic Development

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) - Human capital development is important for many nations to sustain a viable economic development, the Ruler of east coast state of Pahang Sultan Ahmad Shah said Monday.

He said people would need to consistently learn and relearn new skills and capabilities in order to survive in this ever competitive world market.

"Having a skilled and knowledgeable workforce can elevate a growing nation into a developed nation and improve the standard of living among the population.

"By developing the human capabilities in terms of technical and conceptual skills, organisations, indeed nations as a whole, can create a viable community of high performers," he said at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) Special Convocation, here.

The convocation was held to confer the Honorary Degree of Doctor of
Philosophy in Business Administration (Human Capital Development) upon Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al-Nuaimi, a member of the Supreme Council of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Rulers, who is also the Ruler of the Emirate of Ajman.

Sheikh Humaid received the honorary doctorate for his leadership and exemplary contributions to the development of human capital and enhancement of social benefits to the people of the emirate through his personal initiatives and active supervisions.

After assuming the leadership of the smallest emirate of UAE, Sheikh Humaid has made significant investments in human capital as well as physical infrastructure of the Emirate of Ajman.

Also present at the event were IIUM's founder and former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and IIUM President Mohd Sidek Hassan.

Sultan Ahmad Shah, who is also the Constitutional Head of IIUM, said the human capital initiatives established by Sheikh Humaid were not only restricted to Ajman but benefited other nations as well.

"With the establishment of various organisations such as the Human Appeal Organisations in Ajman, it has provided infrastructures and educational facilities in countries such as in the Sudan, Bosnia and the Gaza strip," he said.

Meanwhile, Sheikh Humaid, in his acceptance speech, commended Malaysia for being a modern and successful country under the leadership of Dr Mahathir and now under the administration of Najib Razak.

Sheikh Humaid's speech was read out by his son, Sheikh Rashid bin Humaid Al-Nuaimi.

After the ceremony, Sheikh Humaid paid a courtesy call on Dr Mahathir, before presenting appreciation medals to Sidek as well as IIUM Rector Prof Dr Syed Arabi Idid and Dean of the Office of Corporate Strategy and Quality Assurance Prof Dr Abdulaziz Berghout.

Sheikh Humaid also performed the ground-breaking ceremony for the new IIUM hostels.
