Canada an attractive destination for further studies - high commission official

KOTA KINABALU (Sabah, Malaysia), Feb 16 (Bernama) -- World class education at affordable rates, employment flexibility plus a safe and welcoming multi-ethnic lifestyle are the reasons why Canada has become a favourite destination for international students to further their studies, said the Senior Trade Commissioner of the High Commission of Canada in Kuala Lumpur, Douglas Bingeman.

He said these factors were what gave the country the edge over others like Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States when it came to further education.

Speaking to reporters at the Canadian Education Fair here today, Bingeman said Canada had been applying a non-aggresive approach to bringing in international students all this while but they were changing their tactics and were stepping up efforts to promote the advantages the country had to offer.

With around 10,000 programmes offered, Canada managed to rake in 178,000 international students from more than 160 countries in 2009, he said.

In terms of educational ties between Malaysia and Canada, he said it was a long standing one with the history backdating to the 70's and 80's showed how popular it was for Malaysians to go to Canada to study.

The education fair will also be held in Kuching on Feb 23, and in Kuala Lumpur on Feb 27 and 28.
