Fresh clash occurrs after a week of ceasefire
BANGKOK, Feb 16 (Bernama) -- A fresh skirmish occurred at the Thai-Cambodian border Tuesday, ending a week-long ceasefire, less than 24 hours after the United Nations Security Council called for a permanent ceasefire.
Army spokesman Col Sansern Kaewkamnerd said a Thai soldier was seriously wounded in the 5am clash.
"The Cambodian troops bombed and shot at Thai troops stationed at Phu Ma Khua,in Si Sa Ket province, and met with retaliation from the Thai side," he said.
The four-day clashes at the disputed border area ended on Feb 7 when Thailand and Cambodia agreed to a ceasefire after the loss of 10 lives from both sides.
The UN Security Council meeting in New York yesterday urged the two parties to establish a permanent ceasefire and resolve the situation through dialogue.
The border dispute involved both nations claiming an area of 4.6 square kilometers surrounding the 1,000-year-old Preah Vihear Hindu Temple, although the International Court of Justice ruled in 1962 that the temple was located in Cambodia and it was listed as a world heritage site by Unesco in 2008.
