IBM TO ENGAGE WORLD IN MEANINGFUL CONVERSATION ABOUT THE FUTURE
PETALING JAYA, Feb 16 (Bernama) -- IBM will mark its 100 years of its establishment this year with a commitment to look ahead and engage the world in a meaningful conversation about the future.
Its vice president (corporate citizenship and corporate affairs) and president of international foundation, Stan Litow, said the company would continue to manage for the long term.
"We will look at opportunities to make big bets in our people, technology and with our clients.
"As we look forward to the next century of progress, we see how we have learned from the steps along the journey in the past 100 years we have taken," he told a media briefing on 'IBM centennial: The path ahead for the modern corporation' here Wednesday.
On June 16, 2011, IBM will mark its 100-year anniversary. It will be a double celebration for IBM in Malaysia, which will celebrate its 50th year.
Litow said the centennial was grounded on a core set of ideas.
"They are Reinventing the Modern Corporation, Pioneering the Science of Information and Making the World Work Better," he said.
He said one key programme under 'Reinventing the Modern Corporation' idea was the Corporate Service Corps (CSC), IBM's version of the American Peace Corps.
"Under the programme, IBM send teams of eight to 10 of its top employees from around the world, with skills in technology, consulting, research, marketing and finance to key emerging markets for one month or more," he said.
Since 2008, IBM has deployed some 1000 IBMers to countries like the
Philippines, Vietnam and China to work with local organisations and businesses, he said.
"IBM benefits by growing its next generation of leaders with the skills required to lead in a globally-integrated world," Litow said.
Meanwhile, IBM Malaysia managing director, Ramanathan Sathiamutty, said to date four CSC teams had been deployed in Johor and Penang.
The teams' assignments included coaching on marketing and fund-raising campaigns for local non-profit organisations, sharing of business management skills with small medium entrepreneurs and establishing best research practices for local universities.
"Since 2009, seven IBMers from Malaysia have been selected for CSC volunteer assignments and for this year, another three IBMers from Malaysia will be deployed for month-long volunteer assignments in Morocco, Turkey and Brazil," he said.
