Malaysia to host 5th Commonwealth Bowling Championships

PETALING JAYA (Malaysia), Feb 16 (Bernama) -- Malaysia will host the fifth edition of the Commonwealth Bowling Championships to be held from Feb 21 to 27 here.
Top national keglers comprising Adrian Ang, Zulmazran Zulkifli, Siti Safiyah Amirah and Zandra Aziela will compete against bowlers from 16 Commonwealth countries like England, Australia and India for medals and the CTBF (Commonwealth Tenpin Bowling Federation) Triple Diamond Trophy.
Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress (MTBC) deputy president Mohamad Noor Abdul Rahim said the championships was supposed to be hosted by India last year but was postponed problems with facilities before Malaysia stepped in to host the tournament.
"CTBF has expressed their confidence. It will be the first time for Malaysia to host the championship.
"After all, MTBC as previous hosts of the 1998 Commonwealth Games and the WTBA (World Tenpin Bowling Association) World Championships in 2003, had demonstrated their expertise," he told reporters here Wednesday.
Tenpin bowling was first introduced in the Commonwealth Games in 1998 when Malaysia hosted the games, but never made a second appearance in the games.
CTBF then was established at Stirling, Scotland in 2002, with its prime focus of staging the Commonwealth Tenpin Bowling Championships, biennially and to further develop and promote the sport in Commonwealth countries.
Stirling also hosted the inaugural championship in the same year, followed by Paphos, Cyprus (2004), Melbourne, Australia (2006) and Belfast, Ireland.
