India's shooting challenge ends as Gagan, Sanjeev crash out

Beijing, Aug 17 (PTI) Shooter Gagan Narang Sunday came tantalisingly close to booking a berth in the final but luck deserted him when he needed it most in the 50m Rifle 3Position event of the Beijing Olympics here.

Gagan, who had also just failed to qualify for the 10m Air Rifle event before losing on countback, faltered in kneeling and eventually finished an unlucky 13th with hispersonal best total of 1168.

Compatriot Sanjeev Rajput aggregated 1163 (395 in prone, 380 in standing and 387 in kneeling) to finish 26th in thequalifying round.

Gagan was impressive in prone, firing 98,99,98 and 99 to tally 394 and though did better in standing, which accounted for 389, he was right in the mix at fourth place with one footin the final.

A mundane kneeling performance, however, threw his campaign in complete disarray. He began with a dismal 94 and went one less in the second series and the writing was clear on the wall by that time. Though he tried to put himself back on the track firing 97 and 100 in the last two series, it wasa little too late.

"Kneeling was my weakest position and I had told earlier also that if I do well in this position, you would see me in the final. Unfortunately, that's precisely what happened,"rued the Hyderabadi marksman.
