1 Malaysia to ensure people's support for developed nation status
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 18 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Najib Razak said Thursday the 1Malaysia concept emphasises on the aspect of the people's togetherness and inclusiveness so that they would uphold and support the national vision to achieve the developed nation status by 2020.
The Prime Minister said the concept was also clear in the Vision 2020, which was mooted by former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad in the effort to turn Malaysia into a developed nation, not only in terms of micro-economic achievements alone but also emphasising on the aspects of national solidarity encompassing the principles of togetherness, tolerance and diversity.
In fact, the vision had been accepted by all Malaysians, and made into a joint vision, he said at the programme on strengthening and acculturating the Senate, Malaysian Parliament at the Banquet Hall, Parliament House, here Thursday.
The programme was attended by about 300 members and former members of the Senate, as well as former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Senate President Abu Zahar Ujang, Lower House of Parliament Speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia, former Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Hanif Omar and Chairman of the 1Malaysia Foundation Prof Dr Chandra Muzaffar.
Najib said the solidarity concept that he had emphasised under the 1Malaysia concept was also reflected in the country's sports arena where this was clearly demonstrated in football and badminton.
He said that during his meeting with the national football team, the Malayan Tiger squad last year, members of the team who were together in the team since at school, demonstrated a strong spirit of togetherness.
"In addition, we can look at national shuttler Lee Chong Wei and his coach Misbun Sidek, where upon winning, the first person that Chong Wei would hug is coach Misbun," he said.
He said that the 1Malaysia concept encouraged Malaysians to adopt the inclusive trait so that eventually "when we mention the Malaysian race, it's not about making the Chinese to be more Malays."
In the press conference after the programme, Najib said that the people's understanding on the concept was still not deep enough although the concept had been widely publicised.
"They understand what is the 1Malaysia concept but their understanding is not that deep. This is due to the fact that when we make speeches, for example, the percentage of people listening and appreciating our speech is not that high although it is spread by the media and so on.
Najib said in order to achieve the 1Malaysia objective, "we have to do follow up and amplify the message".
He also hoped that the media could play a role in assisting to clarify and analyse the 1Malaysia concept in a deeper and more accurate manner.
Meanwhile in his speech, Najib said the selection of the national
administration concept based on "Constitutional Monarchy and Parliamentary Democacy" by the past leaders was a wise decision because it provided the people with the right to choose the government of their choice through the election process once in every five years.
Under the system of Constitutional Monarchy and Parliamentary Democracy, it gave the top leadership the opportunity to formulate various programmes and at the same time implement them, he said.
"We are not hasty in making plans and short-term measures or to be too populist as to sacrifice the interest of the future generations.
"That's why we have been able to implement 10 Five-Year Development Plans (The Malaysia Plan Series) and three Long-Term Perspective Plans (RRJP), which had been successfully formulated and implemented, and all these had enabled our country to be more prosperous and the people enjoying a better living condition.
"Everyone is amazed by the success of Malaysia," he added.
