Code of ethics propose ban on lawmakers from visiting brothels

JAKARTA, Feb 18 (Bernama) -- Indonesian legislators are facing a ban from visiting inappropriate places such as gambling centers and brothels under a new code of ethics proposed at the House of Representatives.

The draft code of ethics had proposed penalties ranging from a written warning and suspension to dismissal as legislators should any of the lawmakers be found to be in violation of the ethics.

Deputy Chairman of the of the House's Honorary Council Nurdiman Munir, who is involved in the drafting of the new code of ethics, said the new code would not only bind lawmakers inside the house complex, but also outside the compound should it be approved, he was qouted by the Jakarta Post Thursday.

During Wednesday's plenary, the content in the draft could not convince all legislators to pass it into a House regulation.

The report said a number of lawmakers, mostly from opposition parties such as the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), the People's Conscience Party (Hanura) and the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) protested the partial formulation process of the draft.

"How can we endorse the draft code of ethics if representatives from our party have not been involved in deliberating it," Ahmad Muzani of Gerindra said.

The Honorary Council consists of 11 lawmakers from seven House parties excluding Gerindra and Hanura, the two parties with the smallest number of seats in the House.

House deputy speaker Priyo Budi Santoso who chaired the meeting had delayed the endorsement of the new code of ethics pending a machanism that involves all parties during its deliberation in the honorary council.
