Malaysia Former Prime Minister Manathir Hopes New Egyptian Goverment Will Be More Sympathetic To Palestinian Cause

SERI ISKANDAR (Bernama) - Former Prime Minister
Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today he hoped that the new government in Egypt would
be more sympathetic to the Palestinian cause.

This would help the Palestinians live a normal life, better than they are
doing so today, he said.

Dr Mahathir also called on Islamic countries and Muslims all over the world
to be united and organise consistent demonstrations against Israel, for its
occupation of Palestine, and its ally, the United States.

"What we need to do is to have consistent demonstrations all over the world,
just like the one you saw in Egypt, for example, that requires massive
organisation," he said, but added that he did not think the Islamic world could
come together to organise such a demonstration against the United States.

"The world's leaders are really scared stiff and would not do anything to
annoy the US," he said at the Islamic Affairs Perdana Forum entitled "Palestine
- A Global Issue" at University Teknology Petronas (UTP), here.

The forum, conducted in the English language, will be broadcast over RTM1 at
10pm on March 17.

Dr Mahathir, who is Chancellor of UTP, was a panel member along with Assoc
Prof Dr Hafidzi Mohd Noor, director of the Palestine Centre of Excellence (PACE)
Malaysia. The forum was organised by UTP and the Department of Islamic
Development, Malaysia (Jakim).

The former prime minister, who is chairman of the Perdana Global Peace
Organisation, said: "We must never give up, and must continue sending aid like
food, medicine and construction material which are extremely important to
Palestine."

He also said that if war could be made a crime, then even the United States
would be bound by international law.

"So, if they cannot use force, then there is some hope for the Palestinians.
Otherwise, you are going to see this great power use its military strength in
order to press the Palestinians, and the future will be dark for them," he said.
