Malaysia Goverment Taking Steps To Make Schools, Hospitals `Disaster Resistant`

MELAKA (Malaysia) (Bernama) -- The government since several years
ago has started programmes to make schools and hospitals in the country
"disaster resistant", said Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Mohd Yassin.

He said not only this, the government had also implemented programmes and
campaigns like the "Smart Support Teams" and "School Watching Program" to raise
the spirit of volunteerism among teachers and students.

"The concept of 'safe schools' is being emphasised so that students,
teachers and school administrators put in place emergency response teams to face
disasters," he said when opening the Disaster Awareness Day 2011 and launching
the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction's (UNISDR)
World Disaster Reduction Campaign, here Saturday.

Also present were Health Minister Liow Tiong Lai and UNISDR Secretariat's
deputy director Helena Molin Valdes.

Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, said it was thus imperative for
school infrastructure to be "disaster resistant" as it also concerned the safety
people living in the vicinity.

This was because schools also acted as relief centres in the event of
disasters, he said.

As for hospitals, he said they played a crucial role in treating victims of
disasters.

"If hospitals are damaged in disasters, the lives of victims of disasters
will be jeopardy," he added.

Meanwhile, touching on the "Resilient Cities : My City is Getting Ready"
campaign, Muhyiddin said Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Melaka were the first
cities in the country to implement measures to protect people and infrastructre
in the event of natural disasters.

"It involves the combined effort of the authorities, civil societies and the
local populace," he said, adding that this was a major feature of the Greater
Kuala Lumpur Plan under the National Key Result Areas for the federal capital.

As for the administrative capital Putrajaya, besides controlling population
density and planned development to reduce the risk of disasters, there was also
emphasis on adaptation to climate change and application of green technology, he said.
