Qatar Ladies Open: Qualifiers Set The Pace With Long Duels

Doha, February 20 (QNA) Serbian Bojana Jovanovski today won a long attritional duel against Poland s Urszula Radwanska in the second round of women s singles qualification round, setting the pace for absorbing contests at the WTA Qatar Ladies Open main draw starting here Monday at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex.
Jovanovski won 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (13-11).
The fiercely competitive encounter showcased rallies, drop shots, volleys and stamina of a standard far ahead of the condescending label of 'qualifying rounds' that precede major women s tournaments on the WTA circuit.
Radwanska displayed more aggression, emotion and disputed close calls with the referee while Jovanovski was calm and did not emote, even when she made unforced errors like serving double faults at the big points.
The Serbian squandered two match points while she was leading the third set 6-5 which gave the excitable Radwanska an opportunity to get back as the match extended to the tie-breaker.
Both ladies broke each other twice in the third set where fortunes swung sides repeatedly. Determination and nervousness ensured the quality of tennis fluctuated from excellent to mediocre as both committed unforced errors on the big points which could have clinched the match for either.
Ultimately, Jovanovski won the long tie-break, 13-11, much to Radwanska's disappointment.
The competitive spirit of this match is evident from the fact that the match on the adjacent court between China's Shuai Peng and Australia's Anatasia Rodionova started midway of the second set and ended while the tie-breaker was at the halfway stage.
Peng breezed to 6-3, 6-2 win to ensure Rodionova s bad run of first round exits continues.
