Russian sumo wrestler held for possession of marijuana
TOKYO, Aug. 18 Kyodo - Tokyo police arrested Russian sumo wrestler Wakanoho on Monday on suspicion of possessing marijuana in June in violation of the Cannabis Control Law, police officials said.
Wakanoho, 20, whose real name is Gagloev Soslan Aleksandrovich, was allegedly in possession of a cigarette containing 0.368 gram of dried plant matter including cannabis on a street near Japan Railway's Kinshicho Station inTokyo's Sumida Ward on June 24. He was 19 at the time.
The wrestler, who holds the rank of maegashira, has admitted to the allegation, saying the marijuana was given to him by a foreigner in Tokyo's Roppongi area, according to the police. The police said they have seized a cannabis pipe fromthe wrestler's home.
According to the Nihon Sumo Kyokai wrestlers' association, it is the first time that a currently active wrestler ranked in the juryo division or higher hasbeen arrested.
The case came to light when the wrestler's wallet containing a Russian-made cigarette and his alien registration card was handed to police after he lost it on a street. The police said the cigarette smelt distinctly of cannabis,prompting them to examine it.
Wakanoho, from Russia's North Ossetia, belongs to the Magaki stable. He debuted in the ring in the 2005 spring tournament. In the 2009 Kyushu tournament, he joined the ranks of maegashira wrestlers at the relatively young age of 19 years and 3 months. His record as of this year's Nagoya tournament in July was131 wins and 81 losses.
