MALAYSIA STEPS UP INDIAN CAMPAIGN, EXPECT 20 PERCENT INCREASE IN TOURIST ARRIVALS
P. Vijian
CHENNAI, Feb 21 (Bernama) -- Tourism Malaysia's four-city sales mission kicked off in the southern city, aiming to seize more tourist flows to Malaysian shores this year.
Last year over 690,000 Indian tourists visited Malaysia and the Tourism Ministry officials are optimistic of the Indian market, as India's outbound travel grows annually.
"This is our annual tactical promotion with tour operators to position Malaysia on the Indian outbound map.
"There has been steady growth from the Indian sector as a result of our smart partnership with industry players," Manoharan Periasamy, Mumbai-based Director of Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board, told Bernama.
About 50 Malaysian participants -- from hotel and resort operators, airlines and tour operators are taking part in the ongoing sales mission, which would move on from Chennai to Hyderabad, Pune, New Delhi and to Dhaka in Bangladesh.
Deputy Tourism Minister Dr James Dawos Mamit would be leading the mission from Pune later this week.
Increase in direct accessibility from major Indian cities to Malaysia, value for money tour packages and rising middle class Indians, largely spurred by the buoyant economy, had contributed to the healthy growth figures.
"There was a 17 percent growth in Indian tourists arrivals to Malaysia last year compared with 2009 and we are expecting about 22 percent growth this year.
"Malaysia has become a family destination for many Indian families, there is something for everyone to enjoy. India is the second most important market for Malaysia after China, outside Asean region," added Manoharan, who was instrumental in opening up the Indian market over the years.
Mark Chen Hon Kit, Fraser Place Kuala Lumpur's director of sales and marketing said India was increasingly becoming a key market in the region, with Indian travel industry flourishing along with its robust economy.
This year's sales mission themed "Nature At Its Best, Luxury At Its Finest" is slated from Feb 21 to 28.
