Melbourne second most liveable city in the world - survey
MELBOURNE, Feb 22 (Bernama) -- A new study has named Melbourne the second most liveable city in the world.
Canada's Vancouver topped the Global Liveability Survey list -- compiled by the Economist Intelligence Unit -- with Vienna third.
Australian cities received perfect scores for education and healthcare and Melbourne was the cream of the crop, despite a black mark for traffic problems.
Melbourne's Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said he was thrilled with Melbourne's move up the rankings in the liveability list.
"We welcome the news that Melbourne has taken the number two spot," Doyle was quoted as saying by the Herald Sun newspaper.
"We all love Melbourne for its parks and gardens and fantastic events and it's great to have it recognised for the wonderful city it is. We have held both the number one and number two spots in previous years."
Sydney came seventh while Adelaide and Perth came equal eighth.
Brisbane was ranked 21 in the list of 140 cities.
The index takes into account factors including crime rates, cost of living, infrastructure and climate.
Australian cities far outranked some of the world's most popular
destinations. London managed a paltry 53rd and New York 56th.
The worst cities in the world to live, according to the study, were Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea, at number 138; Dhaka in Bangladesh at number 139 and Harare in Zimbabwe at number 140.
