Singapore company evacuates Singapore, Malaysian workers from Libya

SINGAPORE, Feb 22 (Bernama) -- A Singapore company is evacuating 31 of its workers, mainly Singaporeans and Malaysians, from its operation sites in Libya which is currently in turmoil following an uprising by Libyans against their government.

Boustead Singapore said the company had managed to transport back
six of its Singaporean and Malaysian workers Monday who were working on the Al-Marj township project in Tripoli.

Three more had left Tripoli for the Philippines.

In a statement Tuesday, the company said it had to bring back the workers safely in light of the demonstrations and violence in several major cities in eastern Libya.

The company has also arranged for all Boustead staff, who were involved in other projects, including those residing in Tripoli, to be flown out of Libya on the earliest available flights.

The company said it was suspending all operations in Libya until peace was restored and the full extent of the political situation could be ascertained such that the safety of its staff were not compromised.

It added, control of the township project had now been taken over by its joint-venture partner General Construction & Building Company which would continue the construction work.
