Punters back Costello to lead Liberals
Former treasurer Peter Costello's colleagues aren't sure but punters reckon he'll take the federal coalition to the next election. Gamblers backed Mr Costello in from $1.80 to $1.70 on Monday after a Fairfax/Nielsen poll revealed 44 per cent of voters preferred him as coalition leader, compared with 27 per cent support for Malcolm Turnbull and 17 per cent for the incumbent Brendan Nelson.
Dr Nelson's price remain unchanged at $3.50 on Monday, according to Sportingbet Australia. Mr Costello has shortened from $2.50 just three weeks ago, snatching favouritism, while Malcolm Turnbull has drifted out from $1.75 to $2.35.
The latest opinion poll reveals 74 per cent of coalition voters want Mr Costello in charge while Dr Nelson has the support of just 19 per cent of party faithful.
Sportingbet chief executive Michael Sullivan says historically punters have had a good nose for political issues.
"The 'cash' poll has indicated all along the leadership is there for the taking, if Mr Costello wants it," Mr Sullivan said in a statement.
"He has enjoyed constant support from punters betting on the Liberal leadership at the next election. "Brendan Nelson ... is becoming less popular with punters by the day."Mr Costello has said he will announce details about his future once his memoirs are published next month.
