Pensioners need more money now: poll

another eight months before a decision is made about increasing the aged pension.

Mr Swan indicated a decision on pensions would not be made before the 2009 budget because dealing with the adequacy of the pension was a "very big" structural change. But an Essential Research poll, released on Monday, reveals 78 per cent of Australians believe pensioners should get an immediate rise. Just 13 per cent of those surveyed agreed pensioners should be made to wait until next year's May budget before getting extra support. Three per cent of those surveyed said pensioners shouldn't get a rise at all.

Mr Swan has conceded pensions are inadequate under the current system but argued the Rudd government "simply can't undo in one budget what has taken 12 years to develop".

The Australian Greens on Sunday called on the government to increase the pension by $100 per week before Christmas. The single pension rate is presently $273 a week, while the combined couple rate is$456 a week.
