KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 24 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Najib Razak, who is on an official visit to Turkey, visited the Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen International Airport (ISGIA) Wednesday, one of the two major airports serving Istanbul, the largest city in Turkey.
Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) said in a statement issued here Wednesday that the airport was managed and operated by Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen International Airport Investment Development and Operation Inc.(ISG) while MAHB has 20 percent equity in the company.
It said that the other partners were Limak Group (Limak) from Turkey and GMR Infrastructure Limited (GMR) from India, holding 40 percent equity each.
"This is MAHB's first participation at an airport in Europe together with the Turkish company, Limak."
"Besides being the shareholder, Malaysia Airports was involved in the provision of advisory and consulting services in the airport's master plan, detail design study and especially in the Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (Orat) exercise," the statement said.
MAHB said that Najib commented "the involvement of Malaysia Airports in this partnership was another milestone to further extend its expertise in airport development and management services to airports abroad and also serves as an international acknowledgement of Malaysia's expertise in airport management.
The statement said that ISG has a 20-year concession with the Turkish government which involved the design-build-operate of a new integrated domestic and international terminal to cater for 25 million passengers per annum (mppa).
MAHB's Managing Director Bashir Ahmad said that MAHB sits on the Board of ISG and was actively involved in the management of the airport.
He said future developments that would be required during the concession period include the second runway and further development of the terminal to cater for passenger growth of 35-40 mppa by 2028.
The statement said that ISGIA has established itself as the fastest growing and third largest airport in Turkey, handling 11.6 million passengers in 2010.
"Under the new management, the traffic in ISGIA has more than doubled since its inception. Currently 26 airlines operate from ISGIA and fly to a total of 55 destinations.
"Since its inception, ISGIA along with the airport management company ISG, has received several awards, including World's Best Airport, Public's Favourite in Tourism/Travel Category at the Eight Golden Spider and Turkey's Most Successful Tourism Investment 2010," it said.
