KUWAIT, Feb 24 (KUNA) -- His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah addressed the Kuwaiti people on Thursday on the occasion of the 50th Independence Day, 20th Liberation Day and the fifth anniversary of his ascendance.
HH the Amir began by congratulating the Kuwaiti people on the 50-year anniversary of independence and on the "20 years that have passed since the honorable stance taken by the people of this great land in the face of the aggressive invader, and their united stand with their legitimate ruler to free our dear nation." With these two occasions, he paid tribute to the late Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and the successor late Amir Sheikh Saad Al-Abdallah Al-Salim Al-Sabah, describing them as having carried out "an ideal heroic role in facing the intolerable in vasion," and praising their efforts and accomplishments as "shining beacons in serving our precious Kuwait which will remain in the memory of all Kuwaitis." "They worked day and night with the devoted people of this good nation in reclaiming justice, freedom and pride, dedicating themselves to rebuilding the country after the barbaric invasion in a record timescale which is highly valued by the world," he said.
He also brought up the memory of martyrs and prisoners of war who sacrifices themselves in defence of the homeland, saying it was "a great pride and admiration" to remember such a cause, asking of God Almighty to rest their souls in peace.
HH the Amir then paid tribute to neighbouring Gulf Cooperation Council member states, and the Arab and allied nations, and their leaders, who stood by Kuwait during the invasion and pledged their commitment to the achievement of victory.
On behalf of the Kuwaiti people, he thanked these nations, welcoming the visits of thei r leaders to the country and stressing that the loyal people of Kuwait will not forget these "honorable and courageous stances." He also hailed the United Nations for its role in the liberation of Kuwait, the maintenance of safety of its borders and in attaining security and stability in the region.
"The secure and stable nation of Kuwait did not achieve so only by decrees and principles which are not a new happening, nor by coincidence. This has come due to harmony between the people and their rulers," he said.
"Kuwait has never been a nation of a certain sect or group, and it has never been characterised by sectarianism or a division of class. "All that has been accomplished is a result of the unity and consensus of the people of Kuwait, in maintaining the path of their forefathers, who fought the difficulties of life in the deserts, seas and oceans, with democracy the sound of their conscience," he underscored.
HH the Amir noted to the constitution as the absolut e and unconditional choice of the land, which the people of Kuwait look up to and are proud of on the path of democracy.
A responsible freedom should be based on precise legal guidelines that achieve the greater national good, and democracy provides the right for inspection, accountability and objective criticism for any error or shortcomings, but this has never been a tool for anarchy, loose behavior, doubt or incitement, he noted.
"This great path has not been achieved through dreams, hopes and speeches, but from the fruits of hard dedicated work, a free and creative determination and a true commitment to the responsibility or work and accomplishment - as well as a continuing commitment to loyalty and generosity for generations." He expressed gratitude to older generations of men and women, who through their efforts and long-lasting legacy helped to carry the principles of faith, commitment to work, love of the nation and integrity in manner.
He also said that thi s path was not clear of obstacles, which have been overcome by the spirit of responsibility, dialogue and a wide-scale vision, empowered by knowledge and wisdom.
He also described the decision to give women the right to vote and elect themselves in the legislative elections as a step that was achieved by the will of the Kuwaiti people of democratic awareness.

He added that the unique link between ruler and people in this nation was one of brotherhood, unity and integration, which is thanks to the blessings of God, the cause behind the liberation of Kuwait.
