EU Provides Grant For Asean Peatland Management Project

KUALA SELANGOR (Bernama) - The European Union (EU) has provided a Euro 1.8 million (RM7.2 million) grant for the Sustainable Management of Peatland Forests in South East Asia (SEApeat) project for a four-year period.

Its Ambassador to Malaysia Vincent Piket told Bernama here Friday that the project, which began this year, would be implemented by its project partner, Global Environment Centre (GEC), a non-governmental organisation (NGO) based in Malaysia which focused on environmental issues.

While the core of the project management team is based in Malaysia, SEApeat has a remarkably wide regional scope, it also covers other Asean members which have peatland forests like Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand, he said.

On Friday, Piket launched the project and its maiden activity, The Regional Training and Trainers Programme on Peatland Assessment and Management, here which was attended by representatives from several Asean countries.
