PM OUTLINES THREE POINTS FOR INDIGENOUS PEOPLE TO EXCEL IN EDUCATION

PEKAN (Pahang, Malaysia), Feb 26 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Najib Razak Saturday outlined the three prerequisites for the Orang Asli (indigenous people) to excel in education like the other communities.

He said schools for them must be located near their settlements, there must be dedicated teachers willing to serve in these schools and the indigenous people must undergo a mindset shift pertaining to their children's education.

"The schools must be well-equipped and comfortable for the children to study and must be close to their settlements because one of the reasons for a high school drop-out rate is the distance, sometimes of 25 to 40 km, between the schools and their settlements," he said at the groundbreaking for a primary school, here.

He also said that dedicated teachers who were willing to serve in the schools located near the indigenous people's settlements would help raise the academic performance of their children and their schools.

Najib, who is the MP for Pekan, said it was also vital for the parents of indigenous children to have a change of attitude towards their children's education with regard to their future.

"If they remain in their mould of old, it will be a futile exercise to provide their children with well-equipped schools as it will not achieve the desired result.

"These three components must be present if the Orang Asli want to change and enjoy modernisation," he said.

Najib said the indigenous community faced two major challenges, one of which was a high school dropout rate whereby 31 per cent of indigenous children did not move on to secondary school after primary education.

He said a major task for the government was creating awareness in the community on the importance of education.

"The second major challenge of the community was its lack of achievement in education and, as such, it was necessary for the government to strive to ensure their success in education," he said.

Later, at a Pekan MCA Chinese New Year "open house" at the Convention Hall here, Najib said talented and capable people in terms of intellectuality and skills were the main criterion to determine the desired future of the country. MCA, Malaysian Chinese Association, is a component party of the ruling coalition, Barisan Nasional.

He said the integration of the various communities in establishing unity and harmony was also important in driving the country towards developed nation status by 2020.

Najib drew a parallel of the integration of the people to the "yee sang" (raw fish) dish which he said became appealing and tasty after all the various ingredients had been well mixed.

"Similarly, the efforts to garner greater success for the country in the future depends on the integration of the talents, capabilities and knowledge of the people of the various races," he said.
