Ministry Focusing On Women`s Participation In Private Sector

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) - After achieving the target of having at least 30 per cent women in decision-making positions in the public sector, the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry now wants to ensure the same is met in the private sector and government-linked companies.

Its minister Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said currently, women at the
decision-making level had reached 32.3 per cent.

"Our focus next is on ensuring that the target is also met in the private sector and GLCs," she said in a statement which also welcomed the appointment of Nurmala Abdul Rahim as chief-secretary of the Plantation Industries and Commodities Ministry.

Shahrizat regards the appointment as historic because there are now five women secretary-generals in decisin-making positions in the civil service and this is a record in the sector.

Chief Secretary to the Government Sidek Hassan in a statement on Friday announced the appointment of Nurmala who was previously the deputy secretary-general of the same ministry.

Efforts to increase the number of women of calibre in top positions in the public sector began in 2004 when the government agreed with the relevant ministry then on the policy of having at least 30 per cent women in decision-making positions.
