Middle East Turmoil No Big Impact On Palm Oil Exports
SUNGAI BULOH (Bernama) - The political turmoil in Middle East, particularly Egypt, has had no big impact on Malaysia's palm oil exports to the region.
Deputy Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities Hamzah Zainuddin said the government was taking measures to safeguard the country's investment.
"Egypt may be an important market for Malaysian palm oil bound for North African countries such as Algeria, Ethiopia, Morocco and Sudan but the turmoil there is not that alarming.
"We are more focused on China, Pakistan and India. The government is assessing the situation as Felda has a refinery there," he told Bernama after attending Prophet Muhammad's birthday celebration by RNZ Group with orphans in Kuang near here Sunday.
Pakistan is the second biggest buyer of Malaysian palm oil after China.
Malaysia's palm oil exports to Egypt reached 700,000 tonnes in Sept 2010, up from 600,000 tonnes in 2009.
Hamzah also said the government was studying new incentives for replanting oil palm so that settlers could get yields within three years.
He also gave away donation of RM43,000 and ten computers on behalf of Yayasan (Foundation) RNZ Group and personal donation of RM5,000 to the orphanage hostel.
