Qatar Observes Gulf Consumer's Day Tomorrow

Doha, February 28 (QNA) - Qatar along with the rest of the GCC member states will observe the sixth Gulf Consumer Day which falls on March 1 every year.
Director of the Department of Consumer Protection HE Sheikh Jassim bin Jabor Al Thani, addressing a press conference held Monday at the Ministry of Business and Commerce, said, "Qatar observes this day within the framework of a joint initiative of the GCC states to increase the consumers' awareness through a variety of events organised by the management."
This day emphasises the fundamental rights of the consumers in the cooperation council for the arab states of the Gulf (GCC) countries and the various issues affecting them, he said.
''It is important to educate consumers since the ideal protection begins with the commitment of both the consumer as well as the merchandiser. Both are parties have to adhere to the laws stipulated by the Department of Consumer Protection ensure a better society'',he added.
The annual day is observed to inculcate good consumer culture in Gulf communities and to demonstrate its relevance to the consumer, maintain their rights and defend them, said HE Sheikh Jassim.
A series of consumer awareness exhibitions, lectures and brochures will be held and distributed by the department during the 15-day event.
This year the department has planned a package of events including lectures on the topics of commercial fraud, Islam's guidance for the consumer besides the importance of commitment from traders as part of the process of a vibrant market, he noted.
A number of exhibits on fraud and the menace of counterfeit products in the market will be displayed at three locations. Awareness visits to schools will be held where teaching aids will be distributed to address young consumers. They will be educated on the importance of responsible consumption and purchasing as well as the need to avoid extravagance and wastefulness.
To this objective, HE Sheikh Jassim said, the department will take advantage of the platform of religion and through the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs allocate speech during Friday prayers in many mosques in the country to urge the public to rationalise their consumption and avoid extravagance and keep the saved money as one of the five basic necessities called by Islam.
Some well-know advocates will deliver lectures on this topic, he said. (QNA)
