OFFICIAL TO ASSESS FOOD NEEDS AT TUNISIA-LIBYA BORDER
DUBAI, March 1 (Bernama) -- The World Food Programme (WFP) executive director, Josette Sheeran, will visit the border between Tunisia and Libya on Tuesday where she will meet people who have fled the disturbances in Libya.
She is to meet aid officials and local authorities, to assess the food needs of those arriving from across the border, according to a statement from the United Nations (UN) agency.
It said more than 40,000 people had crossed the Libyan border into Tunisia in the past week.
"And many of the arrivals say they have had limited access to food during the journey from their homes and workplaces in Libya," according to WFP.
On Monday, the WFP airlifted to Tunisia 80 metric tonnes of high-energy biscuits from a UN Humanitarian Response Depot in Brindisi, Italy.
The biscuits will be included in the food rations being distributed in border areas by local groups and relief agencies.
Libya has been hit by deadly violence amid an uprising that aims to oust the country's leader, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi.
