Lao students to leave for study in Korea

Phenglattanavong and Ms Pinkham Thanavanh, to undertake master's degrees in the Republic of Korea.

The scholarships cover airfares, tuition fees,medical insurance, resettlement and monthly allowances.

The two outstanding Lao students will leave Vientiane for further theirstudies in Korea this month.

The study programme for the two students will run for two years after theyspend one year learning the Korean language.

Mr Bounthom is a Ministry of Justice official. He expressed his gratitude to the Korean government for granting him the opportunity to study in their country. This opportunity will definitely help expand my knowledge in the field of human rights, an area in which Korea has made great progress in arelatively short period of time, he said.

Ms Pinkham, who graduated from the National University of Laos with highscores, will study business administration in Korea.

She hopes her academic work will eventually be helpful in the future development of Laos, as well as her own individual career path. Korean Ambassador to Laos, Mr Park Jae Hyun, congratulated the two students ontheir achievements and wished them good luck in their studies.

The programme will give Mr Bounthom and Ms Pinkham an invaluable opportunityto sharpen their competitiveness for their future careers, he said.

You have to use this opportunity to learn as much as you can, not only at university, but also about Korean culture. The knowledge and skills you will gain will be of great future use to you and your country, said Mr. Park JaeHyun.

In June this year, Korea also awarded scholarship to three Lao students toundertake an undergraduate study programmes for five years.

The Korean Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development, in affiliation with the National Institute for International Development, will provide scholarship for graduate studies for more than 600 students from 120countries this year.
