JMP's five-term reply to clerical initiative unclear - official
SANA'A, March 05 (Saba) - A source at the Office of President Saleh stated Saturday that the five-term reply of the Joint Meeting Parties (JMP) through mediators from the opposition Islah party and others to the clerics' initiative to lift the country out of the current crisis was unclear and confused.
The interpretation of the fourth term by the JMP included contradicted and unconstitutional statements and was not in line with the people will that can be expressed through the ballot boxes, the source said.
Focusing on the fourth term, the source cited the term as saying: "to put a timetable to implement the necessary steps within an interim period providing this should take place by the end of this year according to a previous presidential initiative".
But this conflicted with the third term which called for a peaceful and smooth transition of power based on the pledges of President Saleh not to extend his term, not to bring his son to power and not to run for president again when his term ends in 2013, the source continued.
"The interpretation of the opposition was as an apparent coup against democracy and the constitutional legitimacy. The constitution is the reference for all, the ruler and the subjects, and any attempt to violate it is unacceptable because it will destroy the constitutional institutions and ignore the will of the people, the real owner of the power," said the source.
A peaceful and smooth transfer of power can't take place through chaos, however, it goes through the will of the people through elections and away from violence or destroying national accomplishments under the flag of revolution, unity and democracy, the source said, renewing the commitment of President Saleh to his promises including not to run for president again and not to bring his son to power as well as to the recently-announced eight-term initiative of the Yemeni clerics.
