Qatar Aims to Export 10 Million Tonnes of LPG in 2011

Doha, March 7 (QNA) Qatar International Petroleum Marketing Company ltd.(Tasweeq) hopes to export 10 million tonnes of Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) as part of its regulated products, the company s chief executive said here Monday.
Speaking at a news conference held here today,Tasweeq CEO Saad Al Kuwari said, "This year Qatar hopes to export 10 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LPG. In 2010 we exported close to 9 mt." He said also Qatar is targeting gross production 12mt of LPG over the next one and a half year to two years.
Al Kuwari stressed while addressing the media on the sidelines of the 15th Annual Condensate and Naphtha Forum which opened here earlier today, the importance of the forum and said, "It offers a platform to all branches of the energy industry whether refining, petrochemicals, traders, trading houses and end-users who can exchange views and ideas."
On Qatar rising exports, Al Kuwari said, "We exported close to six million tonnes of different grades of naphtha from Qatargas, RasGas, Ras Laffan and Qatar Petroleum refineries. Over the next five year, by 2014, our naphtha exports would reach around 2.8 mta."
Post 2014, naphtha production could be channelled to the second phase of the refinery, he said. "We will cut a little bit from our exports in order to divert it to the second phase of condensates. If we are going to build the second phase of the splitter you need condensates as feedstock."
The government, Qatar Petroleum and all share holders are looking at various options whether to divert naphtha to produce aromatic (petrochemical derivatives like benzene, toluene and xylene) or to build platform and aromatic jointly. Within a couple of months we will have a clear picture about this project, he said.
He estimated around 1.2 to 1.5mt of naphtha could be diverted when asked how much would be the projected decrease in naphtha.
Al Kuwari did not mention the exact figure. "I don t have details since this is being handled by our downstream project. They are communicating on this with the eight shareholders of Ras Laffan refinery. I would say there would be a drop in naphtha if the government, QP and the rest of shareholders decide to construct aromatic," he said.
Currently, the existing Ras Laffan set up does not have the facility for aromatics so they are exporting naphtha out of this refinery he added.
