QU Hosts Participants from 16 Countries at Mass Communication Conference
Doha, March 08 (QNA) - Qatar University's Department of Mass Communication and Information Science in the College of Arts & Sciences (CAS) opened its conference on "Trends of 21st Century Mass Communication: Strategic, Ethical, and Multicultural Challenges and Prospects (ICTMC)".
The purpose of the two-day conference is to bring together mass communication academics and practitioners to dialogue on changing developments and the opportunities and challenges facing the industry in the region and worldwide.
The conference program included discussion sessions and presentations by academics and media professionals from such institutions as Qatar University, American University in Beirut, Northwestern University, University of Sharjah, King Faisal University, Paris XII University, University of Louisiana, Qatar Charity, University of Otago, University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Kuwait University, Al Jazeera, Qatar Radio, Qatar TV, Bejaj University, Al Jouf University, Banglore University, Bangladesh Agricultural University, American University of Cairo, Kingston University, Nanyang Technological University, American University of Dubai, University of London, ictQatar, UAE Higher College of Technology, London School of Communication, Mangalayatan University, Al-Jazeera Center for Studies, Georgetown School of Foreign Service in Qatar, Trinity Institute of Professional Studies, and Ohio University.
Attending the opening ceremony were QU VP and Chief Academic Officer Dr Sheikha bint Jabor Al-Thani, CAS Dean Dr Kassim Shaaban, Associate Deans, heads of department, faculty, and students.
In his opening remarks, Dean Shaaban said: "This conference is at an extremely critical moment in the history of the Arab world. It is the moment of mass communication as evidenced in the recent events in the region which gave impetus to the impact of social media. The media went from merely reporting the news to actively contributing to the making of the news, as well as putting forward the voices of the youth in their demands for political and social reform and justice".
He said further: "This conference will discuss a wide range of issues of concern to us here in the region, and worldwide. It is our way of bridging the gap between the classroom and the media room, bringing together theory and practice for the benefit of our students".
Acting Head Department of Mass Communication & Information Science Dr Mahmoud Galander said: "This event has drawn 56 participants from 16 countries to discuss the major challenges that will shape the face of mass communication in the 21st century. Issues that will be addressed over the two days impact us all. We hope our discussions will shed light on new approaches and strategies and provide the opportunity to address solutions and recommendations".
Keynote speaker was Dean of Medill at Northwestern University Prof John Levine.
Panel sessions will cover such topics as "Women and Media In honor of International Women s Day"; "Strategic Communication in the 21st Century: The Changing Role of Public Relations and Advertising"; "The Current Landscape of the Documentary in the Arab World"; "New Media: Opportunities and Challenges"; "Revolution in Egypt: Student Views from the Gulf and United Sates"; and The Era of Al Jazeera TV: Challenges and Future Prospects for 3rd World Television".
