Qatar Underlines Importance of International Cooperation to Ensure Right to Food


Geneva, March 09(QNA)- The State of Qatar has underlined the significance of international cooperation for ensuring and safeguarding the right to food, stressing the responsibility of concerned states and relevant organizations in promoting the right of everyone to adequate food, particularly amid of the consequnces of the economic and financial crisis and rising food prices and by virtue of the provisions of relevant international conventions.
Second Secretary, in the Permanent Mission of Qatar to the United Nations Office at Geneva during the 16th session of the Human Rights Council Mansour Abdullah Al Sulaitin said that the State of Qatar is making investment activities in many world countries in the agricultural field,noting however that Qatar spares no effort to provide support in this area, either at the bilateral or multilateral level .
Qatar , he made clear has established a programme of the Qatar National food security in order to achieve food self-sufficiency, as part of this programme with non-governmental organizations to develop research and studies of best practices and optimal use of resources in the agricultural sector.
The project also aims to develop a sustainable approach to food security and seeks to contribute to supporting the four pillars of the Qatar National Vision 2030, namely the human and social development, economic, environmental, and operates through the major plans on finding radical solutions to the problems of food security through the expansion of the following four economic sectors' activities in Qatar namely renewable energy, water desalination and management, agricultural production and food processing.
Second Secretary, in the Permanent Mission of Qatar to the United Nations Office at Geneva also explained that Qatar's delegation was briefed with great interest on the content of the report which was read out by Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food Olivier de Schutter , and the important information it included about the right ways amd means neeeded for realizing such goals . Qatar's delegation was also informed of the recommendations of the Special Rapporteur in this regard.
He pointed out that the aforesaid report reveals how countries can redirect their farming systems to acquire highly sustainable methods having ample production, that would contribute to the gradual realization of the right of human being to sufficient food.
The same report also indicates that countries with limited resources are forced to rationalize their respective national budgets instead of the introduction of new techniques, whether in agriculture or energy sectors.
Mansour Abdullah Al Sulaitin further pointed out that the delegation of the State of Qatar agrees to the view contained in the report about the importance that the States have to implement public policies to support practices that are based on ecological agriculture through devoting the maximum resources available for the progressive realization of the right to food to avoid such negative impacts on the behaviour of he individuals and the societies since these factors are regarded as one of the elements leading to practicising violenace and terrorism .
