Qatar Attaches Great Importance to Children's Rights
Geneva, March 09 (QNA) - The State of Qatar has underlined that it attaches great importance to children's rights saying it has adopted a preventive policy to protect all rights.
It referred in this respect to Article (22) of the Permanent Constitution of the State of Qatar which stipulates that the state takes care of children, safeguards them from causes of corruption, protects them from exploitation and evils of physical, mental and spiritual neglect and provide appropriate conditions for them to develop their skills in various fields under the guidance of a sound education.
This came in a speech given today by first secretary at the Permanent Delegation of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Office at Geneva Khalid Fahad Al-Hajri during the sixteenth session of the Human Rights Council's annual full-day meeting on the rights of the child.
Al-Hajri said that although some recent studies confirmed that the State of Qatar is free of the phenomenon of children living or working in the streets, the competent authorities pursue a policy of prevention lies in particular in the enactment of relevant laws, the establishment of several institutions concerned with children and special mechanisms to provide protection, care and support for children and families of citizens and residents alike.
The first secretary at the Permanent Delegation of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Office at Geneva said that the phenomenon of street children has exacerbated significantly in the recent period, adding that its international dimension were probably due to the great concern given to it by the United Nations.
All studies conducted on this phenomenon had agreed that its causes were poverty, unemployment, domestic violence and poor educational level in addition to the absence of the influential role of the family guardian, the increasing divorce rate, the repercussions of economic and financial crisis and armed conflict Al-Hajri sai.
