Container full of Material Shipped to Singapore for Safe Disposal and Recycling.
The programme, which collects unwanted electronic material from the public at Qtel shops and partner sites across the country, has proven to be a major success, collecting tonnes of potentially dangerous material for safe recycling.
For the latest shipment, a total of 4,423 kilos more than four tonnes of waste was gathered in a large container and shipped to Singapore from Qatar.
Included in the shipment were more than 15 boxes of old and unwanted phones, more than a hundred keyboards, around 50 printers and 15 photocopiers. The shipment even contained around 60 outdated answering machines, and a box of broken computer controllers, reflecting the wide range of material disposed of through the e-Waste initiative.
For his part, Executive Director, Group Communications, Qtel,Adel Al Mutawa said: "Qtel s e-Waste initiative is an important social partnership that is making a key contribution to making our society cleaner and more energy efficient. The response from the public and from the corporate sector has been extensive, and we are currently recycling a huge volume of material as part of our CSR strategy, For Qatar, Hand in Hand ."
Qtel s partners on this project have played a key role in its success, and include Agility Gulf, EnviroServe, QDVC, and the United Development Company (UDC).
All Qtel Shops, as well as sites and offices of the partners in the programme, host corrugated drop boxes that are easily accessible to customers who wish to recycle e-waste.
To encourage people to recycle e-waste responsibly, Qtel hosts regular raffle draw to reward e-waste donors and to keep the idea of recycling fresh in people s minds. Donor names are entered into the monthly raffle drawing, which offers prizes including iPads, BlackBerry and other Smartphones and Qtel services.
Disposing of a mobile phone is simple all customers have to do is inform a Shop Customer Service Representative that they d like to recycle their phone. Qtel staff provide a recycling envelope for the phone. The customer removes the SIM card and fills out their name and phone number on the envelope, tearing off and keeping a stub before placing the envelope in the drop box. To ensure data privacy, neither Qtel nor the recycling facility will resell donated mobiles.
The company also hosts special "Big Drop Days", where people can dispose of larger e-waste items, such as TVs, refrigerators and other kitchen appliances, computers and printers. A number of large corporations have worked with Qtel to dispose of their unwanted electronic items to coincide with the "Big Drop Days."
The next "Big Drop Day" is scheduled for 2 April 2011. The Qtel e-waste recycling programme looks to provide a safe option for the "gree en" disposal of mobile phones and related materials that contain potentially hazardous heavy metals.
Qtel s programme is being organised with support of the Ministry of Environment and the Qatar National Campaign for the Recycling of Mobile Phones, Mobile Batteries and Accessories. Companies that are interested in working with the e-Waste recycling programme can dispose of waste through a Ministry-supported programme.
Under the programme, consumers can drop off their unwanted electronics goods at Qtel shops and partner outlets across Qatar. According to Qtel, the programme has so far gathered tonnes of e-waste for recycling.
To recycle mobile phones, customers must inform a customer service representative at any Qtel store that they'd like to recycle their phone.
Qtel staff provide customers with a recycling envelope for the phone, the phone is then put inside and customers drop it in the drop box. Qtel does not resell phones for recycling to ensure data privacy. Qtel also has recycling days for larger electronic items such as fridges and televisions. (QNA)
