Hashimi intends establishing detainees’ database
Baghdad (NINA) – Vice-President, Tareq Al Hashimi, said “human rights status quo needs comprehensive reformation which requires more legislations and monitoring in an organized humane concept.”
A statement issued by his office quoted him as saying “despite the great efforts exerted in past years to improve human rights, it still needs more reformation which requires more legislation.”
He went on to say “although thousands of innocent detainees were released during the past years, thanks to the amnesty law and the efforts exerted to legislate it and follow up on implementing it, the ministry of justice started following up and inspect the prisons not linked to it properly and legally. Also, civilian activities demanding justice to the detainees were organized. Still, thousands of detainees are waiting for their cases to be legally processed.”
He expected that the detainees file will have priority in the cabinet during the 100 days specified for the reformation, since human rights is the most precious and important.
The statement also unveiled Hashimi’s intention to “launch a national database project to collect data about detainees who spent more than the legal detention period or were kept even after the release was decided by courts and are waiting for a financial compensation or punishing the people behind keeping them inside and violating their rights, which is part of the (innocent’s rights law) that the parliament is drafting now.”
