TOKYO, March 27 Kyodo - An Israeli emergency medical team arrived in Japan on Sunday night for a mission to treat survivors of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, marking the first foreign medical team to be sent to the disaster-stricken area, Japanese Foreign Ministry officials said.
The 53-member team, which includes 14 doctors and seven nurses, is scheduled to work in the tsunami-devastated town of Minamisanriku in Miyagi Prefecture, northeastern Japan, for an initial period of two weeks, the officials said.
The team, which arrived at Narita airport, east of Tokyo, before moving to Miyagi Prefecture, will be based in the Miyagi city of Kurihara and will open a makeshift clinic in Minamisanriku, according to the officials.
Israel has also sent items needed for quake and tsunami affected victims such as 10,000 articles of winter clothing, 6,000 blankets, 8,300 pairs of gloves and 150 sets of portable toilets.
