India amends trade policy to prohibit N-commerce with Iran
New Delhi (PTI) - India Thursday amended its
foreign trade policy to prohibit trade with Iran in material
or equipment which can help Tehran's nuclear or ballistic
missile programme, a step aimed at bringing the provisions in
tune with the UN Security Council resolutions.
The amendment to the Foreign Trade Policy 2009-2014,
notified Thursday, prohibits direct or indirect export and
import of all items, material, equipment, goods and technology
which could contribute to Iran's enrichment related,
reprocessing or heavy water related activities or to the
development of nuclear weapon delivery systems.
The changes were required after revision made to the
Information Circular of the International Atomic Energy Agency
(IAEA) 254 which includes valves especially designed or
prepared for gas centrifuge enrichment plants in the NSG
Trigger List.
Another amendment relates to guidelines for transfers
of nuclear-related dual-use equipment, material, software and
related technology.
Another aspect of the amendment was inclusion of a
list of items, material, equipment, goods and technology
related to ballistic missile-related programmes in the
greatest sensitivity list, thus restricting their trade.
The notification was issued to harmonise the foreign
trade policy with the provisions of the UNSC resolution 1929
which imposes additional sanctions on Iran related to its
nuclear and missile development programme.
The resolution was adopted by the UN Security Council
at its meeting on June 9 last year.
