H S Rao
London, Aug 28 (PTI) Rare works of art by nobel laureate
Rabindranath Tagore and other artists from Santiniketan have
been put on display from Thursday for five days at the
prestigious Royal College of Art here.
"A total of 137 pieces of art works of 56 painters -
ranging from old masters Rabindranath Tagore, Abanindranath
Tagore to young and emerging artists - are on show," said
Sangeeta Ahuja, Director of S. A. Fine Arts.
Describing it as a "wonderful exhibition", the High
Commissioner of India to the U.K. Shiv Shankar Mukherjee said
Wednesday, "The very name of Santiniketan brings to our mind,
the images of outstanding art, education and the way of life."
The High Commissioner accompanied by Director of Nehru
Centre Monika Kapil Mohta, spent over half an hour evincing
keen interest in the art works.
Ahuja said that barring the paintings of the old masters
which are from private collections, the rest of the art works
would be on sale.
"Reclining woman" by Jogen Chowdhury at 30,000 pounds is
the highest priced work on display, she added.
"Santiniketan is so unique, so utterly steeped in
history. This is nothing like I have done before. It's an
entirely new concept - to exhibit works by painters from a
particular institution," Ahuja said.
