Several critical milestones have already been achieved. The initial clinical planning for the Center was completed in late 2005 and the architectural design announced in early 2007. The center will be the only hospital that has a bed to even in the emergency room, in contrast to hospitals present in Qatar now where patients share rooms.

The project team is now engaged in planning the intricate details of a variety of different functional areas. These range from Information Technology and administrative processes, to determining the extensive equipment requirements, and planning for the delivery of future clinical services. Detailed planning for a wide variety of support services such as digital imaging and radiology, computerized pharmacy, laboratory, food services, laundry, materials management, security and housekeeping is also reaching an advanced stage, to ensure that the medical center will provide health care services at the best international standards in health sciences.
Al Muhannadi said that the hospital will offer comprehensive care for patients, particularly for women and children who need growing medical services. For women, the center will offer the medical care regarding taking of unborn children in addition to other fields such as tumors in gynecology. As for children, the center will offer a wide range of medical care fields. It will pay particular attention to brain surgery as well as medical care for other issues like genetics. It will provide medical care for plastic surgery, heart diseases and HIV.
Sidra currently comprises 147 full time and interim health consultants. The project team is expected to grow to approximately 270 prior to the hospital opening for service. It is expected that once Sidra opens in late 2012, it will employ more than 4500 clinicians, technologists, biomedical researchers and support staff. It will also serve as an educational center for Cornell University students.
Sidra is also a research center, and much of center's investment will be directed towards research. This reflects Qatar's desire to accumulate necessary skills in medical research and contributing to the future of that field. The research will focus mainly on diabetes, particularly in children, means of cure and protection. This will help in putting the framework for the strategic guidelines in combating the disease. As a result, the standard of medical care in Qatar should increase. The research center will also investigate other diseases such as cancer. Researches will also focus on using the latest developments in genetics to provide medical care to women and children.
The center will be completely digitalized, the use of paperwork will be extremely limited. This gesture comes as part of Qatar's commitment to make the best medical services available. The hospital will use the aid of robots as well as computers during diagnosis.
The center will tend to the comfort of its patient in terms of the ease of access to information and also, in terms of security and supervision. For example, the system warns the doctors if the medicine they prescribed would cause an accidental overdose because it conflicts with another medicine the patient is using.
Sidra is a complex undertaking given the advanced level of technology that will be incorporated into the all-digital facility. The technology will include the latest equipment and software applications for clinical, administrative, and research functions.
After construction, there will be a period of commissioning to confirm that all systems and installations at Sidra are fully operational. There will also be several months of training for the Center staff to ensure they can fully utilize the technologies and can effectively function in an all-digital environment.
