Olympics: No Japanese IOC members for 1st time in over 100 years+
LONDON, April 6 Kyodo -
Japanese Olympic Committee President Tsunekazu Takeda was not among the candidates nominated Wednesday for International Olympic Committee members.
That will leave no IOC members from Japan for the first time since Jigoro Kano became the first Japanese member in 1909 when incumbent members Chiharu Igaya and Shunichiro Okano step down at the end of 2011 at the mandatory retirement age of 80.
The new IOC members will be appointed in an annual IOC session in July. Takeda is likely to become an IOC member in the future, though not until next year at the earliest.
A total of 12 Japanese have served as IOC members since Kano.
Igaya will be 80 years old in May, and Okano will turn 80 in August.
Also on Wednesday, the IOC decided in an executive board meeting to add team events in figure skating and the women's ski jumping to the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic program among six new events.
