PAD core leaders urge more labour union members to join rally

BANGKOK, Aug 30 (TNA) -- Charging that Thai Prime Minister Samak
Sundaravej no longer has the right to govern the country, core leaders of the anti-government People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) on Saturday urged more labour union members to join the rally inside the Government House compound in an attempt to throw out the nearly seven-month-old administration.

Somsak Kosaisuk, a core PAD leader, attacked Mr. Samak, the National
Police Bureau and national police chief Pol. Gen. Patcharawat Wongsuwan
for allowing their personnel to attack the protesters, causing property
damage and physical injury on Friday.

Mr. Somsak demanded that police pay for the damage and take responsibility
for their actions.

On Friday, police raided the protest coalition's base camp at Makkawan
Bridge, near Government House, injuring several demonstrators.

The PAD core leader invited 12 million state enterprise labour union
members to join the rally to hound the government from office, adding that
PAD later on Saturday might move to several other places as it had done
before in a display of force.

PAD core leader retired Maj-Gen. Chamlong Srimuang said the protesters
would continue demonstrating even if they have to "fight for another three
days".

PAD security armed with batons and wearing helmets were seen on the job
behind the closed gates of the government House compound to prevent police
from entering the site.

Maj. Gen. Chamlong's remarks were made as the Government House compound
now resembles a garbage collection area, with accompanying odors.

Under occupation by protesters since Tuesday, the compound is emitting
foul smells due to a lack of garbage bins and refuse collection. Some
demonstrators have been using the normally well-tended grounds in lieu of
toilet facilities, leaving human waste beneath buildings.

The protester leadership has considered opening the doors of Government
House itself, the Thai Ku Fah and Santi Maitri buidlings, to support
protesters need to use the facilities, and needing shelter from the heat
of the sun and inclement weather, saying the structures belong to the
people, and the people have a right to enter and use them. The PAD leaders
have vowed not to destroy property.
