TEPCO president to appear in parliament Mon. over nuclear crisis
TOKYO, April 15 Kyodo - Tokyo Electric Power Co. President Masataka Shimizu will appear before the House of Councillors Budget Committee on Monday to answer questions about his firm's initial response to the nuclear crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, sources familiar with the matter said Friday.
Radiation leaks have continued at the nuclear plant since it lost its cooling functions following the devastating March 11 earthquake and tsunami, prompting the evacuation of residents living nearby.
It will be the first appearance in the Diet by the president of the plant operator, known as TEPCO, since the disaster struck northeastern and eastern Japan.
Shimizu will appear following a request by Masashi Waki, Diet affairs chief of the main opposition Liberal Democratic Party in the upper house, who wants the TEPCO president to provide an account of how the nuclear crisis unfolded.
In addition to Waki, other opposition lawmakers are also expected to question the TEPCO president, the sources said.
