ACEH TO CONDUCT QUR'AN READING TESTS ON REGION'S CANDIDATE LEGISLATORS

Banda Aceh, Indonesia, Sept 1 (ANTARA) - Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD)'s Independent Election Commission (KIP) will conduct Qur'an reading tests on 1,368 candidates for membership in regional legislatures on September 7, a spokesman said.
Yarwin Adidarma, head of the KIP working group, said here Monday ability to read the Muslim holy book was a requirement to become members of both the provincial legislative assembly and the central house of representatives (DPR-RI).
The test will take place at the KIP secretariat instead of in mosques so as to avoid disrupting other Muslims to perform their prayers, he said.
KIP had prepared 10 teams, and each team had four members, one of whom was an independent, he said, adding that the tests would be completed within 10 days.
According to him, implementation of the Qur'an reading test was based on provincial regulation (Qanun) No.3/2008 about local political parties.
However, would-be members of the central parliament would also face the Qur'an reading test based on article 36 of the Qanun, he said.
KIP had also provided technical guidance for the holy book reading test for the candidates of the provincial Legislative Assembly (DPRA) and for the 2009 general election.
Yarwin also said the Qur'an reading tests for candidates for governor and vice governor in 2006 were carried out in Baiturrahman grand mosque in Banda Aceh which could be watched by the public.
But on this occasion such as test could not be held in the mosque due to the great number of participants.
NAD, Indonesia's most-western province, is a predominantly Muslim region with six local parties.
