Iran urges UN to end impunity for Israel’s crimes in Gaza

TEHRAN, April 23 (MNA) – Iran’s deputy ambassador to the United Nations has called on the UN to take actions to end the atrocities being committed by the Zionist regime in the Gaza strip.

“Impunity for those who commit war crimes will encourage them to perpetrate more crimes,” Eshaq Ale-Habib stated at the meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Thursday.

Ale-Habib also pointed to the UN Fact Finding Mission’s report on war crimes committed by Israel during its 2008-2009 military offensive in Gaza, saying, “The issuance of the report raised hopes that the organizations associated with the UN, including the UNSC will take measures to end the impunity for (Israel’s) war crimes, but unfortunately this hope has not become a reality yet.”

Head of the UN Fact Finding Mission Justice Richard Goldstone presented the report of the Mission to the Human Rights Council in Geneva on September 29, 2009, urging the council and the international community as a whole to put an end to impunity for violations of international law in the occupied Palestinian territory.

Ale-Habib added, “The organizations associated with the UN, including the UNSC, should guarantee the full and immediate implementation of the recommendations made in the Goldstone report.

The Iranian envoy also called on UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to issue a comprehensive report on the progress that has been made in implementing the recommendations outlined in the Goldstone report.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Ale-Habib criticized the United States for vetoing a draft UNSC resolution condemning Israeli settlements on Palestinian land after the Palestinians refused a compromise offer from Washington.

He also criticized the Zionist regime’s violation of Lebanese air, sea, and land space and stated that Tel Aviv must withdraw its troops from the occupied Lebanese lands and the Golan Heights.

Ale-Habib added that a “fair” and “peaceful” solution to the Palestine issue must be achieved so that long-lasting peace would be established in the Middle East.
