Environment Minister: Qatar Spares No Effort in Ensuring Food Self-Sufficiency
Doha, May 03 (QNA) - HE Minister of Environment Abdulla bin Mubarak bin Aboud Al Madadi said that today's food crisis is not a regional crisis and that it has become a real threat to humans on the planet, a matter which requires governments, institutions and bodies as well as individuals to work hard to encounter the enormous risks it poses.
He noted that such risks are a natural product of the global economic crisis and the effects of global warming among other causes which human activities played a major and effective role and their negatives aspects overshadowed many of the sectors producing food in the world. This, he said, calls for urgent and deliberate move in order that all measures and actions are taken to limit these consequences and effects which led to food shortages in many regions of the world.
HE the Minister, in a speech at the opening of the first meeting of the joint working team of the Cooperation Council for the Arab Gulf States (GCC) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on food security and investment in the agricultural field in Doha today, said that the State of Qatar spares no effort in containing this critical humanitarian crisis.
The State of Qatar, he added, is making great efforts to produce and provide food for its citizens, and has established national institutions which through successful partnerships are investing in the agriculture in a number of countries, in addition to that Qatar has set up a national program on food security to ensure food self-sufficiency and secure the supply lines from abroad.
HE Al Madadi said the meeting of the GCC- ASEAN countries is a unique and good opportunity to activate fruitful cooperation between the parties and bridge between mutual interests and benefits in investment as well as take advantage of investment opportunities that can consolidate and strengthen the bilateral bases of food security.
He added that learning about laws, legislations, regulations and procedures that allow the production and exchange of food commodities as well as the implementation of standards and specifications for food safety and public health in the development and direction of capital flows should be one of the priorities to help in ensuring the rights of investment and in encouraging private sector partnerships in all GCC countries and ASEAN groups.
HE Al Moudadi also voiced hope that the meeting will discuss formulas for optimal constructive cooperation which takes into account the need of the participating nations to secure food and to overcome the adverse conditions experienced by the world as a result of the global food crisis, especially in the economic and trade side, which hampers bilateral exchanges and contributes to high cost of production and transportation between countries.
