Doha Forum: Creative Community Can 'Be A Driver of Change'

Doha, May 09 (QNA) The creative community can be driver of change for the better, Qatar's pioneering artist said here Monday.
"The performing arts, theatre and poetry have a role to play as a driver of change," Ali Mirza Mahmoud, one of the founders Qatar's theatre movement, told Qatar News Agency (QNA) today.
"Theatre is a tool to spread awareness in society and address many issues like poverty, education and empowerment," said Mahmoud who established with other pioneers the theatre in 1968. Theatre movement needs to be popularised and reach the masses, he said. "Theatre should go down to the streets and not remain an elitist forum which is restricted to festivals," said Mahmoud.
The director-actor spoke to QNA on the sidelines of the Doha Forum on Democracy which today discussed the contribution of the creative community in the holistic development of societies.
"Theatre has a role to play as a driver of change," said Mahmoud who established Qatar Theatre in 1968. "It is a tool to spread awareness in society and address many issues like poverty, education and empowerment."
Although theatre artistes can talk about topics like poverty, paradoxically they themselves are poor, he said.
In his address today, during the second session of the conference on the topic of 'Art and Technology in the Service of Development', Mahmoud said, "Artistes can positively contribute towards empowering people and reconstructing communities devastated by natural calamities.
