Prosecutor General ;Qatar Acts to Achieve More Progress in Anti-Corruption Field
Doha, May 11 (QNA) - HE Prosecutor General Dr.Ali Bin Fetais Al Merri has said that despite qatar's advanced position in combating corruption as per the international indications, yet it is acting to achieve more proress to enhance such efforts exerted on the arena at the national , regional and international levels.
'' The coming stage will witness a set of key procedures to be announced on time to achieve more tangible results as for the implementation of the International Association of Anti-Corruption Authorities (IAACA) and strengthening the principles of impartiality , transparency , accountability and responsibility within the context of an effective and productive partnership with our partners worldwide'',HE the qatari attorney general said in his opening address of the impartiality conference in the private sector and economic development in the GCC members , being held at the Ritz Carlton Hotel here and organised by the prosecution .
The participants, HE AL Merri said represent the public and the private sectors and other prominent regional and international organisations and altogether form a strong alliane to support the constant efforts made to combat corruption noting that such a confrontation with corruption has started earlier and the way still away and full of risks and challenges.
Elaborating HE the prosecutor general said,''The entire world agrees that corruption is an immediate hazard threatening the development process and stability and thus it makes it imperative on all of us to employ all our resources and potentials to combat such a corruption at the international level in general and in the least developing countries in particular'' .
HE further said ,'' Corruption undermines the markets'modus operandi , cripple economic growth , keeps away the foreign investment, undermines and deteriorates public services , weaken confidence in governments and destroys prospects of achieving sustainable development accomplishments''.
Earlier Monday , HE Dr. Ali Bin Fetais Al-Merri Attorney has underlined that United Nations and the international community have to work on the establishment of "international tribunal" to prosecute the corrupt. "We hope that the next stage would see the establishment of an international Court to combat corruption, the same like the International Criminal Court (ICC) in the trial of war criminals," he said in a statement to reporters on the sidelines of a meeting held in Doha by the Executive Committee of the International Association of Anti-Corruption Authorities (IAACA) chaired by the State of Qatar.
The meeting was attended by 25 members of the Committee, which represents 160 countries, where they discussed a range of issues relating to combating corruption and limit its spread at the international level.
HE Dr. Ali Bin Al-Merri said the meeting had discussed several issues, including the pressure on countries that have not acceded to the UN Convention against Corruption to join the Convention, as well as to press the Signatories States to the Convention to respect and implement the commitments contained in the UN Convention.
He also explained that the means of pressure on countries to respect their obligations guaranteed by the Doha agreement, which was signed in 2009 when Qatar hosted the Conference of States Parties to the Convention against Corruption.
HE Attorney General further said that the lack of cooperation in combating corruption might lead to the collapse of nations ... "The fall of the States starting from corruption." he said noting that the aforesaid Committee's meeting in Doha is part of the international community's satisfaction with the work done by the State of Qatar and its efforts in the fight against corruption at the international level.
HE the Attoreny General Dr. Al Merri stressed the need for application of the UN anti-Corruption Convention through commitment to the terms of its content .. He explained that the review mechanism, which was approved in Doha and became part of the Convention should be the basis of assessment of national capacities in order to know points of weaknesses and improve the capacities to fight corruption.
The International Association of Anti-Corruption Authorities (IAACA) is a non-governmental organization founded at the conclusion of a special meeting held at the UN Office in Vienna on 19-20 April 2006.
The main objective of the Association is the promotion of the effective implementation of the UN Convention against Corruption, as well as the assistance of anti-corruption authorities internationally in the fight against corruption. The Association will seek consultative status with the United Nations.
